Storytelling: People Are Strange

The Writing Committee presents a fresh crop of true stories told by local friends and neighbors in the Athenaeum garden on the theme of strangers. Host J.D. Scrimgeour has pulled together a lovely lineup. Cool off in the shady Athenaeum garden and hear stories by Marion Evalee, Dorothy Foley, Alison Gerber, and Diana Norma Szokolyai.

Meet the Storytellers

Marion Evalee, a Pushcart nominee, has appeared in the Amethyst Review, Willows Wept, Survivor Lit, the Boston Compass, The New Verse News, Neologism, and Montage. A selection of her poetry is featured in the anthology 14 International Younger Poets (Art and Letters, 2021). She lives in Salem, Massachusetts.
Dorothy Foley grew up on the North Shore and left to practice Constitutional, media and human rights law in Washington, D.C. and London. She has studied creative writing with J.D. Scrimgeour at SSU and counts her teachers and classmates among her favorite writers. She is currently completing a mystery novel.
Alison Gerber is an Australian poet, an indie-rock bass player, a former congregational minister and now a PhD student at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. She previously appeared at the Valentine's Day storytelling event at the Salem Athenaeum in 2020.
Diana Norma Szokolyai is the author/editor of three books, with poetry recently published in Critical Romani Studies and The Poetry Miscellany. She teaches at Salem State University and Harborlight Montessori. She is the co-founder/co-director of Cambridge Writers’ Workshop and Chagall Performance Art Collaborative, based on Artists’ Row in Salem, MA.
